Ferdinand Mulnier (French, 1817-1891)
Mulnier was an early portrait photographer active in the 1860s to 1880s in France who took images of celebrities, the elite, and societal families. Each image was decorated in a frame or roundel around the face or bust like a commemorative painting, showing the ways that early photography strove to mimic aspects of great paintings for legitimacy.
