Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881-1973)
Picasso was a painter, sculptor, printmaker, and ceramicist known for popularizing the Cubist movement. Early in his career, he embraced a realist style that would evolve into abstraction infused with symbolism. Many of his works were reflective of his own life, and others took on political and social meanings that helped define a generation. Picasso was prolific, creating upwards of 13,000 paintings and over 100,000 prints and engravings. Photographed by Lucien Clergue in his later years, he is treated with tenderness from his photographer friend.
