My body of work uses graphic illustration painting, drawing, and fabric to explore time, memory, and people within space. Within this context, I am interested in depicting places, characters, and emotions between people. I enjoy creating and interpreting characters, emotions, and relationships. Each piece is a process of imagining another world, immersed in a reality I can create. I use digital drawing, pen, ink, and paper to create most of my work. I am influenced by Chris Ware, Marjane Satrapi, Norman Rockwell, Jennifer and Matthew Holm, and N.C Wyeth. These artists create work that encourages viewers to assess imagery for narrative elements, and in my work, I hope to evoke creative space similarly.
As a part of my senior Art and Visual Culture thesis concentration, I am designing and modeling a building, designing graphic logos for the businesses in the building, and illustrating characters and scenes related to the building. I have explored the literal and metaphorical avenues of space and human interaction in this project.
In my work, I allow myself the space for my personality and relevant experiences to influence my work and the characters, through avenues of humor, discomfort, or juxtaposition. I find it is through these avenues that viewers can relate to my work. Like the artists’ works that influence me, I want viewers to immerse themselves in the world I have created. I hope viewers are challenged to imagine their own living space and how their relationships and interactions exist within that space. In my work, I am interested in people and how they interact with each other, and I will continue exploring this theme using digital and physical mediums.
