Steve Grover to perform at Bates
Acclaimed pianist, composer and drummer Steve Grover performs with his jazz ensemble at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, in the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall. The public is invited to attend free of charge.
Grover, the 1994 winner of the Thelonius Monk Institute of Jazz/BMI Jazz Composers Competition for Blackbird Suite, also garnered recognition as a winner in the 1996 JAZZIZ magazine Percussionists on Fire talent search. In addition to teaching ensembles, drum set and jazz piano at the University of Maine at Augusta and Bates College, since 1984 Grover has been director and faculty member for the Maine Jazz Camp, a two-week summer program held each summer on the University of Maine at Farmington campus.
As a jazz drummer, Grover has performed with Dizzy Gillespie, Buddy Tate and Lenny Breau, among many others, and has recorded two CDs, Blackbird Suite and In the G Zone.
The concert is co-sponsored by the Bates College Concerts Committee and the college’s music department.
