Nick Shadowen '12
Bates first-year Nick Shadowen (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) made the biggest splash of his impressive fall season on Sunday, when he took on junior teammate Amrit Rupasinghe (Colombo, Sri Lanka) in the final match of the 19-player Singles A Flight in the annual Wallach Men’s Tennis Invitational. Shadowen came from behind to prevail in a hard-fought victory over Rupasinghe by a score of 3-6, 7-6(2), 10-5.
Taking a grueling route to the singles final, Shadowen defeated Oscar Pena of Bowdoin, 6-4, 4-6, (10-2), followed by a 7-6(5), 2-6, 10-8 defeat of Colby’s Bryan Brown, and a 6-2, 6-3 ouster of Vassar’s Mike Mattleson in Sunday’s semifinal.
The win capped an excellent fall season for Shadowen. In September he advanced to the Round of 16 in singles at the ITA New England Championships. A week earlier at the Middlebury Invitational, he teamed with junior Ryan Mannelly (New Canaan, Conn.) to capture a big win over Middlebury’s Bonfiglio/Malhame doubles team.
