‘Moonlight’ among the gems as pianist Glazer offers Beethoven sonatas
Frank Glazer, a pianist of international renown, performs five sonatas by Beethoven, including some of the composer’s best-loved, at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, in Bates’ Olin Arts Center Concert Hall, 75 Russell St.

The 99-year-old Glazer, of Topsham, has had a distinguished career that includes numerous recordings, solo recitals and performances with orchestras and chamber ensembles. A student of Artur Schnabel and Arnold Schoenberg, he is at home in every style of music from Bach to contemporary.
His program comprises these Beethoven sonatas:
- No. 8 in C minor, Op. 13 (“Pathétique”);
- No. 17 in D minor, Op. 31, No. 2 (“Tempest”);
- No. 21 in C major, Op. 53 (“Waldstein”);
- No. 14 in C-sharp minor, Op. 27, No. 2 (“Moonlight”);
- and No. 23 in F minor, Op. 57 (“Appassionata”).
Glazer has been an artist in residence at Bates since 1980. He has concertized in more than 24 countries; appeared on his own television show; made more than 50 recordings and performed 30 world premieres. He was a founding member of the Eastman Quartet, the Cantilena Chamber Players and Maine’s own New England Piano Quartette. With his wife, the late Ruth Glazer, he founded the long-running Saco River Festival in Cornish, Maine.
