Here’s a flip version of the most recent issue of Bates Magazine, which went in the mail last month.
The cover photograph by Phyllis Graber Jensen is one of several images featured throughout the magazine that convey the campus community’s reaction to the tragedy that struck our home town.
The cover image depicts a moment in Gomes Chapel on Nov. 1, 2023, one week after the mass shooting in Lewiston of Oct. 25, 2023. As mourners arrived at the chapel for a Vigil for Grief and Remembrance, each received an unlit candle.
During the vigil, Bates multifaith chaplain Brittany Longsdorf brought a flame from candles of remembrance on the altar to the first row. From there, community members lit one another’s candles, passing the flame back, the light growing quickly, person to person, heart to heart.
If you’re an alum and seeing this issue makes you say, “Hey, I didn’t get my copy,” you can update your mailing address — or any contact information.
You can also submit a Bates Magazine class note and/or photo for the spring 2024 issue.
