Holding onto hope after the Lewiston shootings

During a vigil in Gomes Chapel on the one-week anniversary of the Lewiston shootings, President Garry W. Jenkins reminded the Bates community of the capacity for human acts to help lift the darkness left in the wake of tragedy.

Pain and worry have ruled days and nights in Lewiston since Oct. 25. But on a frosty fall afternoon, smiles were everywhere as local children and families came to campus for trick or treating, welcomed by Bates students showing love for their Lewiston community.

What began with warmth and optimism in early October ended with unspeakable sadness in our home city of Lewiston. Bates and Lewiston have responded with strength and hope, realizing there’s a long road ahead.
