Acclaimed Vienna Piano Trio to perform at Bates
The Vienna Piano Trio, which according to The New York Times plays with both “the energy of a college ensemble” and “the polish of long acquaintance,” performs in a Bates College event at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 29, in the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall, 75 Russell St.
Tickets for the concert, which has been rescheduled from March 23, are $6 and available at www.batestickets.com. For more information, please contact 207-786-6135 or olinarts@bates.edu.
The Vienna Piano Trio has performed in virtually every major music center in Europe, the Americas, Australia and the Far East. The group was founded by violinist Wolfgang Redik, cellist Marcus Trefny and pianist Stefan Mendl in 1988. In summer 2001, Matthias Gredler replaced Trefny as cellist.
The trio performs regularly at major music festivals and tours worldwide. From 1997 to 2006, the trio held its own annual concert series as part of the Wiener Musikverein’s “Jeunesse Musicale.” In 2006, the ensemble undertook a residency at the Wiener Konzerthaus, and offers four concerts for the Wiener Konzerthausgesellschaft every season. In 2011-12 the ensemble has been ensemble in residence at London’s Wigmore Hall.
The trio’s discography includes works by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Dvorák, Shostakovich and Schnittke, all released on the British label Nimbus Records. Its recordings have earned the trio highest critical acclaim as well as several awards.
In 2002, the trio recorded all of Schubert’s piano trios for the label MDG, followed by the complete Dvorak piano trios, also for MDG. In July 2010 they received the “Echo-Klassik 2010” award for their CD of Haydn piano trios.
