Fulbright recipients 2013: Valerie Jarvis
A major in biological chemistry with a minor in Spanish, Valerie Jarvis ’13 of Granville, Mass., received a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship for work in Malaysia.
Jarvis will bring considerable teaching experience to her assistantship in Malaysia: three semesters as an assistant in elementary-level classrooms in the U.S., a semester teaching three English classes in Spain and six weeks designing and teaching an English curriculum for Chinese students in an immersive summer program at Lawrence Academy.
“I’m interested in Malaysia because of the opportunities for community involvement due to the placements in small rural communities,” she says.
Jarvis expects her assistantship to strengthen her ability to work with different cultural perspectives in the classroom. After her Fulbright experience, she plans to unify her interests in health care and teaching by pursuing a master’s degree in public health education.
