Ijaz Shafi Gilani, an expert on Pakistani public opinion and international relations, visits Bates College from Oct. 3 through Nov. 11. A Fulbright visiting specialist with the "Direct Access to the Muslim World" program, Gilani is professor and dean of the faculty of social sciences at International Islamic University in Islamabad, Pakistan. He also heads Gallup Pakistan, an opinion and marketing research firm.

Gulnara Abikeyeva, a Kazakh film critic and Fulbright Scholar, will introduce the award-winning movie Beshkempir (Adopted Son) by director Aktan Abdykalykov at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, in Room G52 (the Keck Classroom) of Pettengill Hall, 4 Andrews Road. The public is invited to attend the 82-minute screening, followed by a discussion led by Abikeyeva, free of charge. Refreshments will be served.

Kurt Eilhardt, a senior classical and medieval studies major at Bates College, was recently awarded a Fulbright scholarship to study medieval Nordic culture and the introduction of Christianity to Norway at the University of Oslo in 2002.
Professor's book focuses on ethnic nationalism, Macedonian conflict

Loring M. Danforth, professor of anthropology at Bates, has written a book about the claims to and construction of Macedonian identity in Northern Greece and Australia. In The Macedonian Conflict: Ethnic Nationalism in a Transnational World, just published by Princeton University Press, Danforth examines the Macedonian conflict in light of contemporary theoretical work on ethnic nationalism, the construction of national identities and cultures, the invention of tradition and the role of the state in building a nation.
