11/9/22 BOC Meeting Minutes
- Hi and welcome (Pia).
- Mitchel introduction (Pia and Mitchel).
- Mitchel is the new Outdoor Program Manager, who will work with Pia. He is a sophomore passionate about helping more people get involved outside in various ways.
- Go around- what is something you have done outdoors recently (Pia)?
- AESOP (Catie).
- If you are a sophomore, you can be an Assistant AESOP Coordinator. The application closes tonight, November 9, 2022. It can be found in Bates Today.
- OPM HIRING (Pia).
- If you are interested in the OPM job, Pia is going abroad and is looking for someone to fill her spot and help out Mitchel. The job still needs to be posted, but it will be soon.
- Catie talks about how interesting it can be because you can learn about program management and policy and take on as much as you want.
- Winter Carnival- puddle jump!!! (Catie).
- The BOC is responsible for the puddle jump.
- It needs to be staffed by BOC members.
- Trip leader training agendas (Catie).
- This weekend, it is part of the process of getting a trip leader certified.
- Dates: (Catie).
- Classroom training: this weekend! 10-4 pm Sat & Sun, one-hour lunch break
- Catie goes over the content that will be covered.
- Leadership while working with peers, risk management, communication, conflict resolution, leave no trace, equity and inclusion, accessibility, trip planning, emergency and lost person protocol, incident reports, map and compass, and field topics (will go over more during leadership trips).
- Question: do we have to make leadership trips if we did it through AESOP? (Sophie).
- You can still take WFA or Classroom Training and fill the rest of the requirements in the Spring if you can not right now. Additionally, if you find other training that works with your schedule, the BOC can pay $200. We are still determining if WFA will be offered in the Spring (Catie).
- WFA: Nov 19 & 20, 8-6 pm both days.
- Ten spots are left, and if you commit to being a trip leader for the outing club, it is free of cost. Otherwise, it is around $150, and you can pay to take it without being a trip leader.
- The BOC is also working on Avalanche Training, which is around $400 (Catie). There is an interest link on Instagram (Shenny).
- Overnight/day trip/rock climbing (this is weather dependent).
- Overnight trips are challenging because it is starting to get cold, but anyone can get certified.
- Confirmed trips: (Catie and Pia).
- Salt Pump Climbing nights 2x month Weds/Friday – (Nathan/Adelle/Liina) if they are there.
- This Sunday from 1-6 pm. The sign-up is up but is already full. However, you can get on a waiting list.
- These trips will be offered twice a month by certified trip leaders.
- Lost Valley FREE ski lessons! Starting in January, two sessions for eight people.
- The BOC will send out information next semester. It is a January and March session.
- Two four-week sessions, 7:30-9:00.
- XC ski hut trip: Feb Break February 22-24.
- AMC hut trip.
- Ski and Snowshoe.
- Sleeping in the hut, with meals included.
- Working on a March break trip.
- We do not know the details yet but if you are interested, let BOC know.
- April trip ideas.
- Hopefully, weekly trips in paddling, hiking, etc.
- Whitewater rafting trip – (Catie).
- End of the year trip, during the last week of short term.
- Overnight white water rafting trip in The Forks.
- There are 80 spots available.
- There will be a fee, but it is unknown right now, and if it is a barrier to anyone, there is help available.
- Heidi–.
- Update on Community engagement ideas in the works.
- Appalachian Trail Maintenance: Section of the AT that we are responsible for maintaining.
- Androscoggin Land Trust: Help with trail maintenance on local trails and possibly connect new trails to make them longer.
- Lake Auburn Watershed: Trail maintenance, species management on conservation land, environmental science watershed trivia night, and volunteer with local field trips with Lewiston and Auburn Schools. They would also sponsor film viewings for BOC members.
- Question: Would we rather have recurring trial maintenance with fewer people or more significant group events?
- Both could work, more significant events and smaller ones if needed.

- Social media update.
- Send your photos.
- Please take photos of any trips you go on, even if they are not directly with the BOC.
- Thanksgiving series.
- Whatever you do during the break, send those pictures for Shenny to post.
- November is Native American Heritage Month, and Shenny has been working on social media content related to this month and the BOC.
- New Gear: (Ethan)
- Sleeping pads.
- Surfboards.
- Fins and Leashes. We should have 17 surfboards by the Spring.
- Wetsuits.
- If you know people that could donate wetsuits, please let Ethan know.
- Camp cookware.
- Complete sets of things.
- More hiking boots.
- College Outside.
- More functional mountain bikes.
- We have many base layers, socks, and hand warmers.
- Due to risk and liability management, we do not have alpine gear for this winter. However, the BOC can help with Lost Valley rentals, and the E-Room does have Nordic Skis.
- Orange gear for hunting season.
- To rent BOC gear, you go to the E-Room on 96 Campus Ave, on Monday-Thursday from 5:30-7:00. The gear rental policy is on the Outing Club Website.
- Where do we want to meet next month?
- Lean-to night.
- 5:00-9:00 pm next Wednesday (tentatively). The BOC will send out an email soon.
- You can go to the Lean-to whenever you want; you do not need to go with BOC.
