1/18/23: BOC Meeting Minutes
- Welcome. (Mitchel)
- AESOP Leaders. (Mitchel)
- Application is due on January 28th.
- Co-leader or matchmaking form.
- You can apply with a co-leader or could match up with another leader through a matchmaking form if you do not have someone to lead a trip with.
- There is no experience necessary.
- There are no specific trips. You can come up with your own ideas and lead any type of trip at any level that you would want.
- Upcoming Trips. (Mitchel)
- All trips can be signed up for on Bates Engage.
- Ski Lessons at Lost Valley.
- Mt. Blue Snowshoe.
- This is Capped at 8 people, but there is a waiting list.
- January 21st.
- Salt Pump.
- January 22nd, 1:00-5:00 pm.
- Climbing with no experience necessary.
- The BOC will provide gear if needed.
- Ski Shuttles.
- If you have a season pass to Sunday River or Sugarloaf there with be twice-a-month shuttles to the mountains to provide transportation.
- This is only providing transportation not the price of a pass or a day ticket.
- The first shuttle will be on January 28th.
- Morse Mountain- Beach Day!
- Bates conservation area by Popham Beach.
- A hike that is roughly 2 miles each way and ends at a beach.
- Two vans will be taken on January 29th; this will be a half-day trip.
- BOC will provide spikes and necessary gear for a Winter hike.
- Beginner-level hike.
- March or April Break Trips.
- If you have ideas about trips over these breaks, contact Mitchel about them, they can vary from all experience levels. (msoederb@bates.edu)
- Outdoor Programs Manager. (Mitchel)
- The BOC is hiring an additional OPM to work with Catie and Mitchel.
- If you are interested the link to apply is in the BOC Instagram Bio and on Handshake.
- Winter Carnival. (Mitchel)
- The second weekend in February.
- Puddle Jump.
- February 10th.
- The BOC needs volunteers. Contact Mitchel if interested. (msoederb@bates.edu)
- The BOC is looking to run sledding, hot chocolate, fort-building, snowshoeing, etc.
- Regatta. (Mitchel)
- The BOC used to host an annual puddle regatta in which you could create a vessel to go out on the puddle.
- This has not happened in recent years, but if there is interest in bringing this event back in a safer way let the BOC know.
- This would include vessel inspection, life vests, etc.
- Questions?
- Is there any word on trip-leader training?
- There is going to be an overnight trip leader training at some point this semester.
- The BOC is also trying to offer full trip leader training this semester, preferably in April.
- This would include Wilderness First Aid training, a classroom, and an in-the-field component.
- You can complete these steps in any order.
- The E-Room email went out today.
- Acadia Mountain Guides offers ice climbing. (Claire)
- Is there any interest in a trip to do this?
- Wood carving workshop. (Allison)
- A request for more lessons for those that have minimal experience in the outdoors.
- Horseback riding. (Alison)
- Whale watching. (Shenny)
- Surfing in the Winter.
- The Watersport director is Tommo, and he is planning trips like this.
- Possibly lessons at Higgins or Popham Beach.
- This could take place over Spring Break.
- Casco Bay Island.
- Mountain biking.
