The Bates Section of the Appalachian Trail
The BOC proudly stewards the oldest continually maintained section of the Appalachian Trail in Maine. Bate students have maintained this same section of trail since the 1930s. The Bates section is in Roxbury, Maine, near the Height of Land on Route 17. The 3.5 mile section climbs uphill to the summit of Bemis Mountain and ends at the Bemis Mountain Lean To. In order to care for the section of trail, Bates students clip brush growing across the trail, paint new blazes, and most importantly clear trees in the spring that blew down across the trail during the winter’s storms. If you want to become involved, there are typically two trips per year to maintain the Bates section of the AT, one in the fall and one during short term.
