About

Özgür earned his Ph.D. in International Studies at the University of Washington, Seattle. Before joining Bates, he was a Research Fellow at the Middle East Initiative at Harvard Kennedy School and a Visiting Scholar at the Russia and Eurasia Program at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. Özgür’s research focuses on the nexus of international security and comparative politics, specifically civil-military relations, authoritarianism, political violence, armed conflict, and security cooperation, with a regional specialization in Turkey and the Middle East. His secondary area of specialization is Russia’s security relations with the West.
