David Marchick is an attorney, businessman, diplomat, and academic who is now dean of the Kogod School of Business at American University, where he leads more than 2,000 students across undergraduate, graduate, and certificate programs. He has also taught at Dartmouth’s Tuck School of Business. 

Before joining American University, Marchick served in the Biden administration as the chief operating officer of the United States Development Finance Corporation. He was also an advisor to President Biden’s transition team. He hosted the podcast Transition Lab and co-authored a book, The Peaceful Transition of Power: An Oral History of America’s Presidential Transitions (2022). During the Clinton administration, Marchick held several government positions focused in the areas of transportation and trade. 

He spent 12 years at the Carlyle Group as managing director and as a member of Carlyle’s Management Committee. In that role, he oversaw the investment firm’s regulatory and government affairs, communications and branding, and sustainability efforts among other areas. Before joining Carlyle, Marchick was a partner at the law firm Covington & Burling, focusing on international trade.

Marchick serves on the board of trustees for the Holocaust Memorial Museum and is a co-chair of the National Council of the National Park Foundation.

He graduated from the University of California at San Diego and has a law degree from George Washington University as well as a master’s in public affairs from the University of Texas Austin. He and his wife, Pamela Kurland, live in Washington, D.C. They have two children, Hannah and Zachary ’26.
