CMMC Family Practice Residency Program

Bates College has partnered with the Central Maine Medical Center (CMMC) Family Practice Residency Program to provide Bates Students with a unique opportunity to learn more about healthcare. There are three distinct options depending on your class year and level of experience:

  • Attend virtual didactic lectures
  • Shadow at the Family Practice Residency’s Family Medicine Clinic
  • Shadow interns and residents on CMMC’s Family Medicine Inpatient Floor

In order to participate in the shadowing portion of the program, you will need to do the following:

  1. Complete the Registration Form.
  2. Complete HIPAA training.
    HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996) is United States legislation that provides data privacy and security provisions for safeguarding medical information. In order to work with patients at CMMC you are required to be HIPAA certified. You can accomplish this through Bates’ association with CITI Programs, which provides on-line training/certification for various purposes. Bates provides this free of charge.
  3. What type of immunizations do I need to provide proof of?
    If you would like to participate in shadowing at the Family Practice Residency’s Family Medicine Clinic or CMMC’s Family Medicine Inpatient Floor, you will need to provide proof of the following immunizations: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella, COVID, Flu, negative PPD results within the past 12 months, and a TB test, all filed with Bates Health Services. Participants will also need titers for Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, and Varicella, all of which can be obtained through Bates Health Services. Please contact Bates Health Services at healthservices@bates.edu for assistance, and to obtain your immunization and titers records, which you will then forward to James Smith (jsmith6@bates.edu).
  4. Provide proof of a background check if shadowing.
  5. Meet with Bruno F. Salazar-Perea, M.D., Lecturer in Biology & Faculty Fellow for Medical Studies, or Lea Staedtler, Associate Director, STEM and Pre-Healthcare Advising, to learn more about the program and to discuss your plans.
  6. Sign a CMMC handbook and patient confidentiality forms, view an orientation presentation, and wear your Bates school ID badge while visiting CMMC.
