This course is offered in collaboration with Tuck Business School at Dartmouth and Bates/Tuck alumni. It is designed to expose students to a range of business-related career options and teach them tangible business skills that will prepare participants for future academic and professional success.
Brief Description: This immersive Practitioner-Taught Course equips students with the skills and confidence to approach complex business challenges. The course delivers a comprehensive, dynamic and interactive curriculum and provides students with foundational business skills using a Client-focused Project Management framework. Leveraging the CPM process, students develop and present a cohesive business case study by integrating core business concepts taught by a team of four faculty members from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth and supported by Bates (and Tuck) alumni practitioners. The course emphasizes experiential learning through a central case study that evolves throughout the program, simulating real-world business challenges and decision-making processes. Key topics include marketing, finance, accounting, spreadsheet modeling, business communications, organizational behavior, and negotiations, aligned with the strategic problem-solving framework.
Learning Goals
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
- Clearly define and structure business problems.
- Apply CPM principles to analyze and synthesize data.
- Leverage interdisciplinary business concepts (e.g., finance, marketing, organizational behavior) to craft actionable recommendations.
- Develop effective communication and client engagement skills.
- Present a cohesive and compelling business case to a simulated executive audience.
Class Schedule: Tues-Fri 9:00-10:30; 10:45-12:15 and sometimes 1:30-3:00
Bio of Practitioner-in-Residence
Peter Friedman is the managing partner and founder of Five by Five Capital, LLC. Prior to the inception of Five By Five Capital, LLC, Mr. Friedman managed mergers and acquisitions as the Vice President of Corporate Development for Loews Corporation (NYSE: L)
Mr. Friedman has also served as Director in the Corporate Strategy and Development Group at United Technologies Corporation (NYSE: UTX). In this role, he managed mergers and acquisitions across all of UTC’s business units with a primary focus on Aerospace & Defense, working with Pratt & Whitney, Hamilton Sundstrand, and Sikorsky Aircraft. His responsibilities included sourcing, managing, and negotiating all aspects of mergers and acquisitions for multi-million and multi-billion dollar transactions, including the most recent acquisition of Goodrich.
Prior to joining UTC, Mr. Friedman was a partner at Oliver Wyman Consulting (formerly Mercer Management Consulting) in the Aerospace & Defense Practice, and was a professional airline pilot for US Airways.
Mr. Friedman received his B.S. in Geology from Bates College and holds an M.B.A. from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College. He also serves on the MBA Advisory Board of the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College.
Bios of Tuck Faculty Instructors
Aram Donigian T’08: Negotiations, Organizational Behavior, & Teambuilding
Aram received his undergraduate degree from the United States Military Academy at West Point and his MBA from Tuck. As a student at Tuck, he served as a Bridge Program Associate. Aram served in the U.S. Army for 21-years as an Infantry and Public Affairs officer, deploying three times to Afghanistan. He has taught management and leadership courses at both West Point and the Air Force Academy. Aram co-founded the West Point Negotiation Project and co-authored several articles on negotiation within the military context, including Extreme Negotiations published in the Harvard Business Review. Aram is also a Senior Trainer with Vantage Partners specializing in leadership, relationship management, critical thinking, and emotional intelligence. In addition to his work with corporate clients, he delivers training on strategic influence and negotiations for Navy SEAL Platoon Leaders.
Amy Florentino T’10: Business Communications
Amy Florentino has more than 20 years of experience as a military officer, operator, strategist, and occasional academic instructor. She currently serves as Commander for Sector Northern New England in Portland, Maine. In this role, she leads more than 1,100 personnel to execute the Coast Guard’s eleven statutory missions across Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and northeastern New York. She oversees an area of responsibility that spans over 5,000 miles of coastline throughout New England and Lake Champlain. Her team operates six multi-mission cutters, eight life-saving stations, two marine safety detachments, and three Aids to Navigation Teams. Ms. Florentino received her bachelor’s degree in Operations Research from the Coast Guard Academy and her MBA from the Tuck School at Dartmouth.
Patroklos Karantinos, T’12: Finance, Accounting and Spreadsheet Modeling
Patroklos grew up in Greece, where he received undergraduate and graduate degrees in finance. He spent five years in corporate finance and M&A advisory, during which he became a CFA charterholder. After Tuck, Patroklos worked for eight years in higher education – including five years at Tuck, focusing on institutional strategy and growth, and three years in public sector consulting. Patroklos has been working with the Tuck Business Bridge Programs since 2011 and in the summer of 2024, he taught the Business Foundations course, in the inaugural Dartmouth Summer Scholars program.
Conwell Worthington III: Marketing
Conwell is an experienced educator with over 20 years in executive arts management coupled with faculty positions in marketing at Tuck, Babson College and Bentley University. Prior to transitioning into academia, Worthington served as an executive in arts management. Worthington acted as the Associate General Manager at The Huntington Theatre Company and the Theater Manager at the Charles Playhouse, both in Boston, MA. Career production highlights include management positions on shows nationally and internationally including Broadway. Worthington also acted as Worldwide Associate to the Production Supervisor for The Lion King, helping coordinate productions in China and the Netherlands and at The Kennedy Center in Washington DC.
