Handshake Internship/Job Search Platform

Handshake is Bates’ online tool for exploration, planning, research, and internship and job listings.

Students and alumni can use the direct Bates link (handshake.bates.edu) to: create their individualized profiles, and share their skills and experiences with potential employers; join virtual events, and research internship and job opportunities; and access scores of resources through the Center for Purposeful Work (including Vault industry guides as well as resume, cover letter, interviewing, and networking guides).

With listings from thousands of employers targeted at college students and recent graduates, including listings shared by alumni and parents, Handshake makes opportunities across industries available for all Bates students to access.

Schedule a Meeting with a Purposeful Work Counselor

Students: To schedule an individual meeting, make an appointment via Handshake with a specific counselor or a counselor aligned with your needs and interests.

1. Log in to Handshake with your Bates email and SSO.
2. Go to
Career Center (visible in multiple locations on the homepage).
3. Click
Appointments. Once you see Schedule a New Appointment, follow the prompts.

After you decide whom to meet with given your needs and interests, you have the option to select one of the following mediums:
– Zoom: We’ll send a Google calendar invitation with a Zoom link.
– Phone: Please provide a phone number in the Handshake notes where you articulate what we can help you with. We’ll send a Google calendar invitation and include that phone number.
– In-Person Meeting: We’ll send a Google calendar invitation with a physical location.

Once you’ve scheduled your appointment, check your email or Google Calendar for the meeting invitation detailing your counselor’s name as well as applicable meeting details.

Alumni: You won’t be able to schedule via Handshake, so please email purposefulwork@bates.edu with your Monday-Friday availability, your preferred medium (see list above), and either the name of a specific counselor or your questions/needs/interests so we can connect you with an appropriate counselor. We should respond within 2-3 business days.

  2. Click on your initials or image in the upper right corner to open a drop down menu.
  3. Select Settings.
    1. – Under Account Information, update your Privacy settings.

Save Specific Search Criteria on Handshake and Receive Notifications of New Internships or Jobs that Fit Those Criteria

This option can be really helpful when you’ve identified specific search criteria that filter for internships or jobs you want. By saving these search criteria on Handshake, the platform can notify you based on your notification preferences (see above) whenever new internships or jobs get posted that fit these search criteria. This option will make the search process a lot more efficient.

CONSIDER THIS EXAMPLE:

  1. Log in to Handshake with your Bates email and SSO.
  2. Click on Jobs on the left-hand side.
  3. Select All Filters on the horizontal filters bar (this will open a pop-up box). Under Job Type, select On-Campus. Click Show Results in the lower right corner of the pop-up box.
  4. You should now see all available On-Campus jobs that are open for application.
  5. On this Jobs screen, you’ll see a blue bar with a bell and a message that says “Notify me about new jobs like this.” If you toggle the switch from left to right, you’ll save the search.
  6. If you click “Manage notifications,” you’ll be taken to the Notification Preferences section discussed above.
