Bates College Data Governance Group
Purpose
The Data Governance Group at Bates College (DGG) is established to oversee and govern the management, security, quality, and responsible use of college data.
Responsibilities
- Policy Development: Formulate, review, and recommend data governance policies, standards, and procedures.
- Data Management: Serve as a resource for relevant departments as they establish guidelines for data collection, storage, access, quality, and retention.
- Training and Awareness: Develop educational programs and materials to promote institution-level data governance awareness and provide training to faculty, staff, and students.
- Data Access Controls: Establish protocols for granting access to data, defining roles, and maintaining access controls.
- Continuous Improvement: Regularly assess and improve data governance practices, policies, and procedures based on evolving needs and industry best practices.
Objectives
- Establish a framework for effective data governance practices and policies.
- Foster a culture of responsible data handling and ethical data use.
- Promote the reliability, accuracy, and consistency of institutional data.
- Facilitate collaboration among departments to achieve data governance goals.
Membership
The Data Governance Group shall consist of representatives from various departments across the college, including but not limited to Information and Library Services; Institutional Research, Analysis, and Planning; the Office of the Dean of Faculty; and the Registrar’s Office. Membership may be revised as needed to ensure comprehensive representation.
Reporting Structure
The DGG shall report its findings, recommendations, and progress regularly to the appropriate college leadership or governing body.
