Places of Interest

Androscoggin Riverwalk

Introduce yourself to the heart of Lewiston-Auburn with a peaceful walk or run along the 1.5 mile Riverwalk, part of the Androscoggin Greenway. 

Bates–Morse Mountain Conservation Area

Comprising 574-acres of conserved rare salt marshes and dune beach ecologies, as well as the college’s Coastal Center at Shortridge field research facility, the BMMCA is open to the public. The walk is 4 miles round-trip on paved and dirt roads with about 500 feet of elevation gain. Please note: dogs are not allowed in any season.

Traquina Boathouse

Opened in fall 2016, the Traquina Boathouse is the training facility for the college’s highly successful rowing teams. Since 1995, the teams have produced 22 All-American rowers and two Olympians, and have recently clinched four straight NCAA National Championships!

Freeport

Home to L.L.Bean as well as countless outlets and boutique shops, Freeport is Maine’s shopping destination. Nearby Wolfe’s Neck Woods State Park is a quick drive down the peninsula from the bustling downtown area.

Martindale Country Club

Featuring 18 holes and four sets of tees for all ability levels, the semi-private Martindale Country Club is the longtime home course for Bates’ golf teams.

Maine Museum of Innovation, Learning and Labor (MILL)

Lewiston and Auburn were once home to some of the most productive textile mills and shoe factories in the country. Learn about our host community’s unique history at Maine MILL (formerly Museum L-A), led by Executive Director Rachel Ferrante ’10.

Bates Mill Complex

Thorncrag Nature Sanctuary

Managed by the Stanton Bird Club (founded in 1919 and named for famed local ornithologist and Bates professor “Uncle Johnny” Stanton), this 372-acre wooded wildlife preserve welcomes visitors for birdwatching, picnicking, and hiking. Please note: dogs are not allowed in any season.

Tumbledown Mountain

Hike up difficult terrain to one of the most beautiful spots in Maine. The alpine pond nestled amongst three rocky summits makes this a favorite Maine hike for many people.
