No! We provide on-the-job training to all employees. We expect you to arrive with content knowledge based upon your previous course work. We provide training to help you build the skills to become an effective tutor. We encourage you to enroll and complete the Short Term course EXDS s27 Peer-Led Learning: Pedagogy and Practice prior to starting work in the Fall. But if you can’t take the Short Term course, then you will be expected to attend training for new tutors throughout your first year of work.
All tutors are required to participate in regular training sessions throughout each academic year. Tutors are paid for attending such meetings. Tutors in their first year of work must also participate in bi-weekly training for new tutors OR enroll in the ½-credit Short Term course EXDS s27 Peer-Led Learning: Pedagogy and Practice.
No. SASC tutors are not experts, rather they are individuals with a high degree of empathy and are great communicators. SASC tutors possess knowledge of the relevant content but also have direct experience in overcoming the challenges of adjusting to learning at the college level. We are looking for students who can share learning strategies specific to the courses they support.
We support many introductory-level and some intermediate-level courses in Biology, Chemistry, DCS, Economics, Mathematics, Physics, Music Theory, and Statistics across the curriculum (Bio, Econ, Math, Psych, Pol, & Soc).
In most cases, we look to hire people who can tutor two or more courses. For example, general math tutors need to be able to tutor Calc I and II as well as at least one 200-level math course. Similarly, Chem tutors need to support both semesters of intro chem and/or both semesters of organic chem. Exceptions include tutoring for music theory and some discipline-specific statistics courses.
Yes, please do! If you are currently studying abroad, we are happy to arrange a Zoom interview.
If you plan to study abroad in the upcoming Fall term, we encourage you to apply and interview prior to your semester away. That way you’ll know if you can expect a tutoring position upon your return to campus.
We don’t have a hard minimum, but typically tutors work at least 3-4 hours per week.
Before the term starts, we ask everyone to let us know what hours they’re available and we build the schedule based on that information.
