Handshake Information
For Students
Bates students can find all on-campus jobs, many off-campus jobs, and internships on Handshake. Students may log in to their account using their Bates email username and password. Students are encouraged to frequently look at the list of positions available on Handshake as it is updated whenever there are new job opportunities.
Handshake access for incoming students is granted by mid-August and does not have to be renewed. The Center for Purposeful Work will send you an email when your account is accessible.
Handshake Tips & Tricks
View our Navigating Handshake Guide for assistance on filtering Handshake to only see Bates jobs. Here are some other Handshake Tips & Tricks:
1. If you only want to look at on-campus jobs, click on the “Jobs” tab at the top of the left hand side of the Handshake homepage, then click “All filters” to the right of the search bar and select “On-Campus” to filter out all off-campus jobs.
2. Want to be notified every time a new on-campus job is posted? Search for “Bates College” in the search bar. Click on “Bates College,” then favorite Bates College. Any time an on-campus job is posted, you will receive an email notification to your Bates email.
3. Student jobs are often posted at the start of that each semester–that is when most students are hired. Be sure to check before/right after a new semester begins!
4. Most job applications will expire at 11:59 PM on the day of the application deadline.
5. Save the jobs you are interested in so you don’t lose them!
6. All on-campus jobs require a resume and a cover letter as part of their application process. Want help with your resume or cover letter? Check out Purposeful Work and look at their drop-in hours or schedule an appointment.
For Supervisors (Faculty and Staff)
To have a position posted on Handshake, supervisors complete Student Employment Forms. The Student Employment Office will post the positions to Handshake and you will receive all applications in your Bates email. If you’re looking to post a position that already exists, view our Student Job Database. Tip: If you are looking to hire a student in an Academic Department, we have six generic positions that may fit what you’re looking for!
