Summary, Scope, and Responsibilities

Seeking applicants for the role of Basic Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-B) to provide high quality pre-hospital care at the EMT-B level as set forth by current Maine EMS Protocols, to individuals on the Bates College campus.

Qualifications, Requirements, and Responsibilities

Responsibilities


-Respond to medical emergencies on the Bates campus both on foot and/or in a first response vehicle. -Render medical aid to the standard set by the state of Maine for EMT-B providers. -Maintain the certifications and skills by attending BEMS trainings, and by pursuing additional opportunities. -Must demonstrate competency in assessing a patient, handling emergencies, and utilizing Basic Life Support Equipment and procedures within their specific licensure level. -Must have good communication skills, being able to verbally communicate in English, in a clear, concise, and positive manner with a) patients and their peers, b) the BEMS Co-Chiefs and E-Board, c) United Ambulance health care providers, and d) the general public. -Must have the ability to interpret and execute written and oral Instructions. -Must have the ability to use good judgment and remain calm in high stress situations. -Prepare run reports in accordance with Maine EMS standards and BEMS guidelines within 24 hours of the completion of a call. "Comply with all departmental policies and procedures. Obeys all laws and governmental regulations, including those related to confidentiality. -Maintain familiarity with all ambulance equipment and supplies used by United Ambulance. -Perform thorough checks of equipment each shift.

Requirements


Applicants are required to possess, at a minimum, a valid Maine EMT-B certification, or an NREMT certification and the ability to gain a Maine EMT-B certification. Applicants must also hold a valid BLS CPR certification. Applicants must be able to pass a screening by the Office of Student Conduct & Community Standards and the Office of Title IX and Civil Rights Compliance. No previous experience working as an EMT is required. Preferences include: Possesses additional training (PHTLS, PEPP, ETC). Prior experience working as an EMT in an emergency system. Prior teaching experience, especially in an EMS related setting. Successfully completed the Short Term course, EXDS S12: EMT Course.

Reporting


Bates EMS EMTs report directly to the co-chiefs, but may be supervised in their duties by service supervisors and crew-chiefs. Bates EMS EMTs will also report to Dennis Russell, the BEMS Director of Service and Associate Director of Health Services for Student Support, BEMS Advisor.

Working Conditions


BEMS EMTs must be physically able to perform all EMT related duties including but not limited to: Must have the ability to lift, carry, and balance 270 lbs with another EMT; must possess good manual dexterity, with an ability to perform all tasks related to the highest quality patient care; must have the ability to bend, stoop, and crawl on uneven terrain; must have the ability to withstand varied environmental conditions such as extreme heat, cold, and moisture; must have the ability to work in confined spaces. BEMS EMTs must be able to pass a health examination performed by Bates Health Services. BEMS EMTs must make themselves available to work 3-4 24 hour shifts a month, including one weekend shift.
