Summary, Scope, and Responsibilities
The America Reads/Counts Tutor helps children in elementary schools with literacy and/or math and science. With the support of classroom teachers, they tutor children who need extra help in the subject matter. They work with children one-on-one or in small groups.
Tutors must be self-motivated, work well independently and enjoy working with children.

Qualifications, Requirements, and Responsibilities
Responsibilities
Specific responsibilities include, but may not be limited to: In addition to helping with academic work, tutors will be responsible for the safety and well-being of the child during the session. If a behavioral problem arises, tutors must make the classroom teacher aware of this and handle it in the appropriate manner as stated by the classroom teacher. They must be able to work independently, be creative, gauge the mood and attention span of the child and act as a motivator for the child during each session.
Requirements
Applicants must be eligible for work-study. Background in child development, early childhood education, daycare work, or work with young children is preferred.
Reporting
Reports to classroom teacher in local school, and Fatuma Haji on campus. Coordinates closely with reading specialist in school.
Working Conditions
Conditions vary depending on the school. Most positions require travel to the school. Bates Community Engagement Shuttle is available to students.
