Summary, Scope, and Responsibilities
Goals: The goal of this program is to strengthen equity and inclusion in STEM by providing peer mentoring for early STEM-interested STEM Scholar students to increase academic and social integration through community building, advising, and peer-peer monitoring. Fellows also establish a SACNAS chapter at Bates, and participate in other events related to equity and inclusion in STEM. Fellows receive training on mentoring practices aligned with the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s “The Science of Effective Mentorship in STEMM.” Each mentor conducts group peer mentoring triangle events and is available for one-on-one sessions with mentees. Each mentor submits written reflections each semester based on their experiences.
STIPENDED FELLOWSHIP: Students receive $250/semester
Responsibilities include:
-Provide peer mentoring for early STEM-interested STEM Scholar students to increase academic and social integration through community building, advising, and peer-peer monitoring. Specific objectives include preventing feelings of social isolation, improving a sense of belonging and confidence, celebrating the success of members and the community, and connecting to peers with similar interests and experiences.
-Participate in training in best practices in peer mentoring through readings and discussions.
-Conduct at least two group peer mentoring triangle events (2-4 mentees per junior/senior mentor) per semester and meet in one-on-one sessions with mentees.
-Participate in SACNAS activities and other events to advance equity and inclusion in STEM.
-Submit written reflections each semester based on their experiences.
