Qualifications, Requirements, and Responsibilities
Responsibilities
The research assistant and steward will be expected to conduct data collection across a number of disciplines. In particular, this staff member may 1) record beach profiles at a number of area beaches; 2) conduct vegetation surveys, sediment monitoring, and Sediment Elevation Table measures in the Sprague and Morse salt marshes; 3) conduct intertidal surveys at several area rocky shoreline sites; 4) analyze, document and archive data; 5) engage with the local community to convey findings and provide educational opportunities for visiting school groups; 6) develop place-based educational materials related to sea level rise, tides and climate resiliency; and 7) support BMMCA social media presence. Other duties may include updating the BMMCA research map and website language, creating a digital record of the visitor logs, supporting management activities within the Conservation Area, etc. Steward tasks include greeting and informing visitors, maintaining visitor records, monitoring the entrance and parking lot, walking the trail and beach, checking for damage or rule violations, and communicating with the BMMCA Director. The work schedule may include weekends and holidays, and must coordinate with work hours of the other stewards.
Requirements
Required: HS diploma; experience with public relations; ability to relate to the public diplomatically and effectively, with firmness when necessary. Ability to be flexible and adjust to a changing schedule depending on weather, tides, etc. Ability to effectively manage multiple projects at one time. Willing to work weekends and holidays. Desired: Experience with fieldwork, data collection, entry and management, data analysis, science communication and social media.

REPORTS TO: Rebecca Clark Uchenna, Director and Robert Long, Lead Steward COORDINATES/WORKS CLOSELY WITH: Rebecca Clark Uchenna, Robert Long, Bev Johnson, Morse Mountain residents (including St. John family members), staff from The Nature Conservancy, Maine Audubon, and the general public.
