Summary, Scope, and Responsibilities
This position will support research and monitoring activities happening within and around the Bates-Morse Mountain Conservation Area as well as support parking lot operations two days per week.
The research assistant and gatekeeper will be expected to conduct data collection across a number of disciplines. In particular, this staff member will 1) record beach profiles at a number of area beaches; 2) conduct vegetation surveys, sediment monitoring, and Sediment Elevation Table measures in the Sprague and Morse salt marshes; 3) conduct intertidal surveys at several area rocky shoreline sites; 4) complete forest surveys at two-three sites; 5) water quality sampling and other surveys related to the Basin Oyster Project; 6) analyze, document and archive data; 7) engage with the local community to convey findings and provide educational opportunities for the local summer school students; and 8) support BMMCA social media presence. Other duties could include updating the BMMCA research map and website language, creating a digital record of the visitor logs, supporting management activities within the Conservation Area, etc.
Gatekeeping tasks include greeting and informing visitors, maintaining visitor records, monitoring the entrance and parking lot, walking the trail and beach, checking for damage or rule violations, and communicating with the BMMCA Director. The work schedule includes all summer week-ends and holidays, and coordinating work hours with the other gatekeeping staff.

Requirements
Required:
HS diploma
Experience with public relations; ability to relate to the public diplomatically and effectively, with firmness when necessary.
Ability to be flexible and adjust to a changing schedule depending on weather, tides, etc.
Ability to effectively manage multiple projects at one time.
Willing to work weekends and holidays.
Desired:
Experience with fieldwork, data collection, entry and management, data analysis.
Reporting
REPORTS TO: Caitlin Cleaver, Director and Don Bruce, Lead Gatekeeper
COORDINATES/WORKS CLOSELY WITH: Caitlin Cleaver, Don Bruce, Bev Johnson, Mike Retelle, and Morse Mountain residents (including St. John family members), staff from The Nature Conservancy and Maine Audubon, and the general public.
