The Artist-in-Residence at Shortridge Coastal Center entails setting high artistic standards to foster creativity and development at the center. Responsibilities may include enhancing studio and trail spaces with art installations, improving the main building with artwork, and hosting art events for K-12 schools. The student will collaborate on weekly work plans with the director, live within a communal household, and engage in artistic residency activities. Work will take place in studio and outdoor forest and coastal settings, with occasional travel for image development and artist visits, with some expenses reimbursed. |

Qualifications, Requirements, and Responsibilities
Responsibilities
The student is expected to set a high standard for artistic endeavor, and to consider their work as significant in the on-going development of Shortridge Coastal Center as a place that fosters artistic inspiration. The student will enhance the small studio on site and may enhance trails with trimming and sculptural cairns, and/or enhance the main building with artwork. Responsibilities may include hosting an art event for K-12 schools, improvements to the building such as painting walls, landscaping, or design work. The student is also responsible for developing a work plan each week. Work plans will be discussed with the director. The student will be living and working at Shortridge within a shared household of between 1 - 15 guests and is expected to engage collaboratively with those guests, while creating an atmosphere of artistic expression. They will utilize a small studio space and work outdoors in forested and/or coastal conditions, and in the surrounding Bates-Morse Mountain/Shortridge region. Travel to and from Bates for image development will be required and not reimbursed (printing and framing of some images may be reimbursed). This work may also require travel to visit artists doing complementary work.
Requirements
Students interested in applying must have completed at least one studio art course, and must have demonstrated interest in arts that foster environmental and place-based awareness.
Reporting
The student is responsible for developing a work-plan each week. Work-plans will be discussed with the director, Rebecca Clark Uchenna.
