Summary, Scope, and Responsibilities

The Committee Selection Board is a distinct and independent branch of Bates College Student Government that oversees the process of selecting Bates students to serve on a variety of Bates committees and boards that have student representatives/committee members. CSB works collaboratively with Campus Life, Bates Faculty and other campus partners to ensure that students are selected to committees through equitable, transparent, and accessible processes. CSB aims to select the best candidates for the various positions based on criteria set forth by the committee chairs or other governing body. The workload of CSB members varies throughout the semester. Students can expect to work between 1-6 hours per week throughout the semester, depending on workload.

Responsibilities


The responsibilities of CSB members include: Communicating with Bates faculty and staff to make sure that student positions are filled efficiently Conducting interviews for interested candidates and making selections Participating in weekly planning meetings to discuss and solidify CSB processes Managing elections for BCSG. This includes BCSG president/co-presidents and assembly members

Requirements


We are currently prioritizing hiring for First Year and Sophomore positions Timely communications (ability to respond to emails within 24 hours unless special circumstance arises) Regular attendance at meetings and workshops Honest, flexible, responsible, dedicated, and level-headed Comfortable with and proficient in public speaking with small-to-medium audiences Excellent oral communication skills. Willingness to learn and make changes based on recommendations of other members and/or Campus Life staff Passion in cultivating an equitable and inclusive environment Ability to work with diverse populations Ability to apply an equity and inclusion lens to all selection processes and with student peer members of the CSB Leadership Development: Leadership development at Bates is defined by a framework describing seven leadership capacities (Bates Leads Framework). Campus Life embeds the Bates Leads Framework into its student positions. One outcome of being a CSB member is to develop and improve these leadership skills. Reporting


CSB Members are directly supervised by the CSB Chair(s), and work closely with Campus Life staff. CSB Chairs are directly supervised by Kim Trauceniek, Senior Associate Dean of Students Kim Trauceniek serves as the advisor and professional staff supervisor of the Committee Selection Board (CSB). As a student organization overseen by Campus Life, the CSB is held to the mission of Campus Life and the Bates Student Code. Personnel matters that are related to the operation of the CSB or may impact your employment status or that of another CSB member, should be brought to the attention of Kim Trauceniek, or another professional staff member in the Office of Campus Life at once.

Working Conditions


CSB members can expect to work in a collaborative environment with other CSB members. CSB members will conduct in-person and Zoom meetings and interviews throughout the academic year. Meetings and interviews are often after 5pm and on weekends. Hours will vary throughout the semester, depending on committee needs and projects Work for CSB will vary from week to week, usually between 1 and 6 hours, but may be as much as 8 hours at the busiest times. Busy times for CSB include the first quarter of the academic year and during the election period from February break to April first. Our weekly team meetings take place every Monday from 6-7pm
