Championships in Site

Bates will host the NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Championships May 13 through 18 at the Wallach Tennis Center,  pictured at right. Bates hosted the event in 2004 as well, and in between the Bobcats fielded the Division III Men’s Singles Champion, Will Boe-Wiegaard ’06, when the championships were held at the University of Mary Washington.

Meanwhile, Bates was also chosen to host the 2009 NCAA Men’s and Women’s Skiing Championships. This all-division event features an array of schools: liberal arts colleges like Bates and Middlebury in the East and Whitman College of Walla Walla, Wash., in the West, as well as state universities like those in Colorado, Utah, and Alaska. Bates last hosted the skiing championships in 1999.

His Lucky Stars

All-NESCAC forward Rob Stockwell ’07 (“A Win-Win Situation,” Spring 2007) is now playing professional basketball in England for the Luna Mansfield Stars, a Division Three team in the English Basketball League, a tier below the top-flight British Basketball League. In a recent October game, Stockwell scored 42 points and hauled down 13 rebounds in the Stars’ 77-65 upset road victory over the Division One Durham Wildcats. At the time of his signing in July, the Stars’ director of basketball operations, Martin Shaw, called Stockwell “mightily impressive.”

Lots of Racquet

Amrit Rupasinghe ’10 (right) of Colombo, Sri Lanka, captured his country’s singles tennis title in August. An amateur, he missed out on a 50,000-rupee payday, or about $445.

Ricky Weisskopf ’08 (“Ricky’s Moments,” Fall 2006) of San Salvador, El Salvador, notched the most impressive win of his career at last summer’s Pan Am games by defeating a top-50 professional U.S. player. Also last summer, Weisskopf spent a week in New York City with StreetSquash, a Harlem-based youth enrichment program where Pat Cosquer ’97 is director of squash. Funded by the College’s George Wigton Scholarship, Weisskopf coached squash and taught astronomy.He’s Aboard

Rower Andrew Byrnes ’05 and his Canadian men’s eight team won gold at the FISA World Championships on Sept. 2. In his first year as a member of the country’s top boat, Byrnes has six teammates with World Cup, World Championship, or Olympic Games experience.
